The share price more than tripled since March; is it too expensive now?

Like just about every other stock, United Rentals Inc. (URI) took a beating in early March. Then, from a bottom of $70.89 on March 23, it more than tripled to reach $246.75 on Dec. 9, as shown on this year-to-date chart:

According to the GuruFocus All-In-One Screener, the following companies have grown their book value per share over the past decade.

Book value per share is calculated as total equity minus preferred stock, divided by shares outstanding. Theoretically, it is what shareholders will receive if a company is liquidated. Total equity is a balance sheet item and equal to total assets minus total liabilities. Since the book value per share may not reflect the company’s true value, some investors check the tangible book value to confirm their investment ideas.

These ratios are important valuation metrics when properly utilized

Introduction

Recently, I have been engaged in rather intense discussions regarding the validity of price-earnigns (P/E) ratios versus price-earnings to growth (PEG) ratios as proper or appropriate valuation metrics. I generally find these types of debates befuddling for a couple of reasons. One, they are often a result of a failure to communicate. Either party or sometimes both parties assume that their adversary holds or supports a specific position which may or may not be a fact.

From my perspective, this was precisely the case regarding the discussion cited in my opening sentence. Assumptions were made regarding my positions on

A valuation reference that investors should keep in mind

As the stock market continues its relentless advance, appealing valuations are getting harder and harder to find.

This is especially true for the highest quality blue-chip dividend growth stocks. Perhaps more importantly, in addition to the market’s relentless advance, there has also been a clear flight to quality – especially with dividend growth stocks. Therefore, the vast majority of the best-of-breed blue-chip dividend-paying stocks are  trading at elevated levels. In other words, finding high quality and value is rare in the dividend growth segment.

This presents a conundrum for the prudent dividend growth investor with money available for investment.

In the fourth calendar quarter of 2015, the KEELEY Mid Cap Dividend Value Fund (KMDVX) rose 1.28 percent compared to a 3.12 percent increase for the Russell Mid Cap Value Index. After a challenging third quarter, equity markets rebounded to post positive gains in the fourth quarter. However, many of the factors that weighed on markets throughout 2015 remain, and will most likely play a key role in 2016. The volatility in energy prices continued, and the situation may become even more volatile as companies succumb to the pressure of sustained low energy prices. China’s slowing growth is also having

The largest detractor was Ryder Systems (NYSE:R) which fell over 23 percent and detracted 34 basis from our results during the quarter. The company reported disappointing earnings results as they were negatively impacted by execution issues which led to lower utilization and maintenance inefficiencies. A decrease in used vehicle pricing also weighed on the stock.
