Thungela Resources Ltd is a South African thermal coal producer and exporter formed in 2021 as a spin-off from Anglo American. The company operates both opencast and underground mines in the Mpumalanga province, including Goedehoop, Greenside, Isibonelo, Khwezela, Mafube, and Zibulo, and holds a stake in the Ensham mine in Australia. It produces thermal coal for export and domestic use, selling primarily to power utilities, industrial users, and trading houses. Export volumes move by rail to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal for shipment to markets in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, while domestic sales supply South African power utility Eskom and other local customers. Revenue is driven mainly by export sales of thermal coal, with pricing linked to global coal benchmarks, alongside domestic supply agreements. The company also pursues renewable energy and diversification initiatives.
