5 tech companies are the largest market caps in the S&P 500 Index and the Fortune 500

"This is the story of man named Jed

Poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed

Then one day he was shooting at some food

Our definition of value is to buy meritorious companies at a significant discount to intrinsic value with a high margin of safety. Since doing this is more art than science, the margin of safety is important. For the last 10 years, we have “shot for food” in value stocks like American Express (AXP), Target (TGT) and Discovery (DISCA).

The effects of large-scale share repurchases can tell us a lot about a company

Benjamin Graham, often called the father of value investing, achieved his fame in a market and an economy that was in many was different from today’s. However, much of his advice is still applicable to this day, including his thoughts on common stock share repurchase programs.

In “The Intelligent Investor,” Graham wrote the following:

“When a company repurchases some of its stock, that reduces the number of its shares outstanding. Even if its net income stays flat, the company’s earnings per share will rise, since its total earnings will be spread across fewer shares. That, in turn, should lift

A look at Seth Klarman's portfolio movements in the third quarter

Seth Klarman (Trades, Portfolio)'s Baupost Group made a number of substantial changes to its equity portfolio in the third quarter of 2019, according to the hedge fund's recently published 13F filing.

It is important to remember that the filing only gives us a snapshot of the portfolio as of Sept. 30, so this is a backward-looking report. It also only includes Baupost's equity positions. The 13Fs do not show cash or debt positions, and only provide a snapshot of the equity portfolio at one point in time.

For example, even though we know that Baupost manages around

Parker plans to step down, and Nike plans to focus on online sales

After a 13-year tenure as president and CEO of Nike Inc. (NKE), Mark Parker announced last week that he will be stepping down in January 2020 and moving to an executive chairman position within the company. He will be succeeded by John Donahoe, the former president and CEO of eBay Inc. (EBAY).

The news came as a surprise to investors, resulting in a 3.4% drop in share prices to $92.32 following the announcement on Oct. 22. Since then, the stock has further dropped to $91.84 as of Oct. 28.

Banks, central and private alike, are feeling uneasy about the social media company’s dive into digital finance

Libra Blockchain, first announced in June, has been facing a torrent of intense scrutiny from media, markets and policymakers. Facebook Inc. (FB), Libra’s creator, calls it a cryptocurrency (despite its not actually being a true cryptocurrency at all), a fact that has likely added to the scrutiny.

Despite Facebook’s efforts to allay public and private worries, central bankers across the world have expressed heightened concern about Libra's existence and what it would mean to the financial world, as have leaders in the private banking industry. Indeed, Libra faces real threats to its

As contrarians running a large-cap value strategy, our stock-picking discipline is organized around taking regular maverick risk on companies that meet our 8 criteria

It is human to want to win and we are pre-programmed as children to get what we want quickly. Then we become adults in need of good investment returns and we are forced to operate in longer time frames of five to 10 years. Only mavericks want to do what is needed.

As contrarians running a large-cap value strategy, our stock-picking discipline is organized around taking regular maverick risk on companies that meet our eight criteria and are being shunned by investors for whatever reasons that preoccupy them today. We like to think in terms of the warts or blemishes

The company’s future prospects could excite investor sentiment

eBay (EBAY)’s focus on improving the user experience could widen its economic moat. The online retailer is seeking to make it easier for buyers and sellers to use its platform in order to boost engagement levels.

The company’s financial prospects are set to be catalyzed by a full rollout of its intermediated payments in 2020 and a pivot to first-party advertisements.

The stock could deliver capital growth after matching the S&P 500’s 7% rise in the last year, with its valuation suggesting that it offers a margin of safety.

The guru, who also manages the Chicago-based firm’s Select and Global Select funds, invests in mid- and large-cap companies to achieve capital appreciation. When picking stocks, he looks for growing companies that have shareholder-oriented management teams. According to the fund’s fact sheet, he will take a position when the stock is trading at a substantial discount to his estimate of intrinsic value, then wait for the gap between the two to close.

Some interesting trends from hedge fund 13F filings

13F data for the last quarter of 2018 is now starting to trickle out. These documents give us a great insight into the world of hedge funds.

Any hedge fund with more than $100 million in assets under management has to file a 13F with the SEC detailing its top U.S. equity positions. However, these reports do not contain detailed analysis on other assets, such as debt, cash and private equity. They provide only a snapshot of the equity portfolio at one point in time and are also backward-looking, so they should not be relied upon for trading decisions.

eBay (EBAY) operates three growing and highly cash generative businesses that connect buyers and sellers of lower volume, harder-to-find items. The eBay marketplace matches more than 175 million buyers with one billion items, listed by more than 25 million sellers. eBay also owns valuable assets in StubHub, as well as a portfolio of international, market-leading, classifieds websites. We expect the eBay marketplace to continue to co-exist with Amazon as the two destinations satisfy different shopping behaviors. Amazon is the premier online destination for new, in-season goods while eBay’s marketplace primarily serves consumer demand for used, off-season or off-price items.

Discussion of markets and holdings

The Oakmark Fund decreased 17.3% during the fourth quarter, which compares to a decline of 13.5% for the S&P 500. This closes a disappointing year, with the Fund declining 12.7%, which lagged behind the 4.4% decline for the S&P 500. We continue to believe that the underlying businesses in our portfolio are performing much better than their stock prices indicate, so we find these holdings even more attractively valued than they were prior to the fourth quarter. Accordingly, we took advantage of unusually high volatility during the quarter to increase the share positions of stocks we believe are most undervalued,
