Imperial Petroleum Inc Frequently Asked Questions
Guru Commentaries on NAS:IMPP
For companies that operate mostly using spot rates, like Imperial Petroleum, this has led to extraordinary profits; Imperial reported y-o-y operating income growth of over 240% (though some of this was also due to fleet expansion). The elevated freight rates due to the closed Strait of Hormuz and higher oil prices have created a tighter market, pushing up prices and benefiting Imperial significantly.
Imperial Petroleum's recent issuance of 9.5 million new shares, along with 19 million warrants, has raised concerns reminiscent of past shareholder value destruction under CEO Harry Vafias. Although the shares were issued close to the spot price, the history of shareholder exploitation casts a shadow over this action. Our current view suggests that this is a continuation of Vafias's fleet expansion ambitions rather than a return to previous shenanigans, but the potential for shareholder value erosion remains a significant concern.
Imperial Petroleum shares went through 4.00 USD, which is important as there is a very large amount of warrants outstanding with the exercise price at that level. This often means the holders of these warrants sell shares when the stock goes up in the vicinity of this level but repurchase them when the stock goes declines again. We’ll have to see if they are done selling but due to this outsized impact on price action we have hedged our bets and sold a significant part of our position. If you’re thinking about investing in Imperial Petroleum yourself, it can’t be stressed enough that Imperial Petroleum is not your typical stock and you should spend quite a bit of time understanding the ins and outs before committing!
