3M's most recent quarter was decent, but sales were very weak. Shares offer a rarely seen dividend yield, making the stock look undervalued

One of my favorite investment strategies is to find stocks that are trading with a dividend yield that is well in excess of the long-term average yield. This usually means that the underlying company is experiencing some pain in its business, such as rapid decline in fundamentals, and should be avoided at all costs. It could also mean that the company is experiencing temporary issues that are likely to subside at some point.

If the accidently high-yielding stock belongs to the latter group, then long-term investors could see outsized returns or at least receive a higher amount of income from

The 'English Warren Buffett' touched upon a few of his holdings, his investment philosophy and business approach

The annual Berkshire Hathaway meetings are referred to as being filled with wisdom about investing, business and even life at large. Similarly, we at Urbem think that the yearly meetings of Terry Smith’s Fundsmith are informative, insightful and rewarding to value investors. The investment guru, known colloquially as the “English Warren Buffett,” has consistently beaten the benchmark with his ODD strategy (Only invest in good companies, Don’t overpay, and Do nothing), which he applies to the global equity market. With regards to this year’s session, below are a few of our takeaways from the Fundsmith team.

The industrial sector has underperformed the S&P 500 in 2020. This decline has given way to higher-than-average yields and lower-than-average valuations

While the S&P 500 is down more than 23% year to date, the industrial sector has been hit especially hard in 2020. The iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ) exchange-traded fund is down 28% so far this year. Of all the sectors, only real estate and energy have performed worse than industrials.

This decline is likely warranted given that significant portions of both the industrialized and emerging markets have seen economic activity grind to a halt as nations around the world attempt to control the spread of Covid-19. This has included shelter in place orders, school closures and business disruption.

On the flip side, two industrial sector names, 3M Company (MMM) and C.H. Robinson (CHRW), were among the major factors hurting performance for the year. 3M, one of the Fund’s largest holdings, has struggled since it lowered its outlook early in the year due to slowing end markets, particularly automotive, China, and in consumer electronics. In addition, investors have expressed concerns about the company’s ongoing environmental liabilities.

Discussion of markets and holdings

Market Overview Fourth Quarter 2019

2019 was a year for the record books! On the heels of the worst December since the Great Depression, U.S. markets started 2019 with the best January performance in three decades and finished at record highs, posting returns that were among the best in the past 50 years.

Looking at its performance over the past three years illustrates the market’s incredible ability to predict market fundamentals. In 2017, with the new Trump administration and a Republican controlled Congress enacting large tax cuts, investors anticipated tax-fueled earnings growth driving the market up 22% that year.

A popular metric used by borrowers has lost much of its meaning

Ebitda is a popular acronym that stands for “earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.” It has become a popular metric for measuring a company’s financial health, and has seen especially widespread use within private credit markets.

However, its usage has come under fire in recent years. Indeed, it has even become something of a punchline for some credit specialists. For example, in 2017, an anonymous Moody’s credit analyst made the now-infamous observation that Ebitda now appears to stand for “Eventually Busted, Interesting Theory, Deeply Aspirational.”

While a funny quip, it is no laughing
